The Impact of Strategic Environmental Lawsuits

Courts are increasingly becoming the arena for environmental policy. When political processes stall, laws and international agreements are inadequately implemented at the national level, or economic interests take precedence, civil society actors are increasingly turning to the courts. Their goal is not only to resolve individual cases but also to bring about structural change.

Strategic environmental lawsuits can thus serve as a catalyst for transformation. Whether this succeeds, however, is not decided solely in the courtroom, but rather depends on whether a society is willing to translate legal decisions into political and economic change.

We published the latest issue of ‘politische ökologie’ (03-2026, Volume 186) in collaboration with oekom Verlag. The publication date is October 1, 2026.
