Stadtwerke München (SWM) is one of Germany’s largest municipal utilities and supplies the citizens of the state capital with electricity, heat and drinking water.
The municipal utility promotes green electricity and its renewable energy expansion campaign. On its website (swm.de) it says: “We take responsibility for people, resources and the environment. Especially as a municipal energy company, SWM has a responsibility to play a major role in shaping the energy transition …”
Contrary to these “green” words, Stadtwerke München has a direct 31% stake in Spirit Energy Ltd, a company that explores and produces oil and natural gas in the North Sea and sensitive ecosystems near the Arctic Circle and sells it on world markets. The resulting CO2 equivalent was about 9 million tons in 2018 alone!
Together with other environmental organizations, Protect the Planet demonstrated against this on Odeonsplatz and started a petition demanding the sale of Spirit Energy Ltd. and SWM’s general exit from fossil fuel extraction.
The petition #ExitSpiritEnergy is a joint action of: Fossil Free Munich, Fridays For Future Munich, Students For Future Munich, Green City e.V., Netzwerk Klimaherbst e.V., Extinction Rebellion Munich, AG ÖkoSozial, Parents For Future Munich, Protect the Planet, Bündnis Raus aus der Steinkohle, WissenLeben e.V., rehab republic e.V., NordSüd Forum München e.V., Landesbund für Vogelschutz (LBV) Kreisgruppe München, Oekom e.V.
